Born 1944 in Bern. Schools in Bern and South Wales (Atlantic College).

Studies of Sociology and Economics in Berlin, Munich and St. Gallen (lic. oec. HSG).

Lives in Zurich.

1973 directs his first feature film «Death of the Flea Circus Director», wins the Joseph von Sternberg Price.

1975 establishes the filmproduction company Thomas Koerfer Film Ltd. in Zurich and directs his second film «The Assistant» after a novel by Robert Walser. Followed by six more feature films, amongst them «Embers» (1983) and «The Green Henry» (1991).

1992 starts to build up a collection of contemporary art, beginning with photography, followed by paintings and sculptures.

1994 founds the film distribution company Frenetic Films Ltd. with 2 partners in Zurich. Leaves the company in 2011.

2000-2014 owner of Quinnie Cinema in Bern (6 cinemas).

2002 elected president of the board of foundation at the Fotomuseum Winterthur. In this position until 2012. During 10 years member of the board at the Kunsthalle Zurich.

2004 publication on the collection: «Stripped Bare - the Body Revealed in Contemporary Art», Merrell Publishers, London/ New York. German Edition published at Hatje Cantz.

2007 «Stripped Bare - The Body Revealed». Exhibition at CO Berlin.

2015 «Sense Uncertainty- A Private Collection». Exhibition of works from the Thomas Koerfer collection at the Kunsthaus Zurich. A catalogue under the same title is published at Kehrer Verlag, Heidelberg.
